William H. Shannon, former director of social studies for the Anne Arundel County public schools, died of pneumonia Friday at Mariner Health Care of Greater Laurel. The Jessup resident was 85.
Dr. Shannon was born in Broadway, Va., and raised in Front Royal, Va. He was a graduate of Randolph Macon Military Academy and served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946 as a quartermaster aboard a minesweeper in the Pacific.
He earned his bachelor's degree in 1947 from the College of William & Mary and taught history at Arundel, Catonsville and Lansdowne high schools. He earned his master's degree in education from University of Maryland, College Park in 1950, and later earned a doctorate in education from the university.
Dr. Shannon was director of social studies for Anne Arundel schools from 1966 until his retirement in 1978.
He was a member of the Anne Arundel Retired Teachers Association and History Teachers Association of Maryland. He also was a prolific contributor of book reviews and articles to the Social Studies Journal.
He was a member of John Paul Jones Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution, and enjoyed the theater, classical music and old movies.
He was a communicant and lay reader at Trinity Episcopal Church in Waterloo, where a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 20.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, the former Sara Frances Waters Brown; two sons, George P. Shannon of Petoskey, Mich., and William H. Shannon of Baltimore; two daughters, Constance E. Bulawka of Jessup and Frances C. Shannon of Arlington, Va.; a brother, Preston Caperton Shannon of Richmond, Va.; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
