John James was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England in 1833 to Charles James and Elizabeth Duncan. On July 5, 1853 he married Ann Wharton, born in 1826 in Nottingham. They settled in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, where he worked as a shopkeeper and basket maker. They raised six children there. After Annie died in 1879, the children dispersed, some going to New Zealand. After son John Wharton James married in New Zealand and settled in Oleander, Fresno county, California, father John was convinced to relocate there in 1885. He was able to assist with farming and raising grandchildren until his death in 1894.
