Lee Bateman, 89 years old, prominent stock man and farmer of the Pierce community, who has resided in McIntosh county continuously for the past 85 years died at his home last Thursday.

Funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist church in Checotah at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon with Rev. Orra Compton and Rev. W.L. Martin officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery under direction of the Smith Funeral home.

Mr. Bateman who came to Indian Territory in 1871 is believed to have lived in the county longer than any other resident. His arrival here was a year before the MKT railroad tracks were lain into Indian Territory and long before the present town sites of Checotah and Eufaula were founded.

Mr. Bateman was born in Coldwater, Miss Jan 9, 1867 the son of James W. Bateman and Sally Nichols Bateman.

He came to Indian Territory with his parents when he was four years old. On February 26, 1898 he was married to Bonnie Lee Pipkins of Brooken, I.T.

The Batemans were the parents of six children, five of whom survive including: Tol R. Bateman, Odess, Texas, Dick Steen Bateman, Pierce, Billie Bateman, Midland, Texas; Jessie Lee Ledbetter, Okmulgee and Faye Bundy, Pierce.

Seven grandchildren: Genen Lee Birdwell, Post, Texas: Monetta Dian Bateman, Oklahoma University; Barbara Faye Barnes, Sacramento, Calif; Charles Richard Ledbetter, Ft. Bragg, N.C.; Morris Lee Bateman, Midland, Texas; Judith Ann Bateman, Midland, Texas.

Three great grandchildren; John Tolbert Birdwell and Richard Clay Birdwell, Post, Texas; Debra Lee Ledbetter, Sacramento, Calif. . . . .
