US Senator. Born in Alexandria, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Marshall College, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1846 and proceeded to practice law in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. He was Huntingdon County prosecuting attorney (1846-49), a member of the revenue commission in 1851 and a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives in 1862. In 1869, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1875. Not a candidate for reelection, he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where served as general counsel of the Pennsylvania Railroad, (1875-77) and general solicitor, (1877-95). He died at age 72 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
