Thomas Benham came from Groten, New London, Connecticut. He enlisted in the Union army of the Civil War at age 20 (1862). He served in Company I, Pennsylvania 13th Cavalry Regiment. In his later years Thomas wrote a letter describing his service history and asking for a pension. I have what appears to be an original draft of his letter. Thomas is listed as a deserter, however, his letter describes a different story.
