Many thanks to Ronny Ferrell for the following obituary:
SURGOINSVILLE, March 14 — C. M. Starnes, one of Hawkins county's most prominent and widely known farmers died at his home near Surgoinsville last week, after an illness tasting only a few days. The deceased leaves a wife, seven daughters and two sons to mourn his loss. At the time of his death, he was 74 years of age. Mr. Starnes was married to Miss Eliza Burton on October 20, 1873. To this union ten children were born, one daughter having preceded him to the grave. The deceased was converted in December, 1874, and immediately connected himself with the M. E. church South. He has been a consistent member of his church since that time.
The funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. Mr. Beard, pastor of the Rogersville M. E. church, South, and the body was laid to rest In the family burying ground. The many beautiful floral offerings marked the esteem which the deceased was held.
