Jennie was the second wife of John J. Barnes

Many friends mourned the passing of Mrs. Jennie L. Barnes, at 5 o'clock Wednesday morning of last week, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emily Stringall, near St. Helena.

Passing at the age of 82, Mrs. Barnes was born in Attica, New York, June 7, 1858. She came West to Oakland at the age of 23, to make her home with an aunt, Mrs. A. W. Gates, a prominent artist and teacher in that city.

A year or so later, she moved to Preston, Sonoma county, where she met and later married John J. Barnes. The latter, a native of Ontario, Canada, previous to his marriage, was in business in Petaluma. Later he moved to Cloverdale for his health and continued his trade there. Since the passing of her husband in 1924, Mrs. Barnes had made her home with her only daughter, Mrs. Emily Stringall. The family has resided in Napa county for the past eight years. Mrs. Barnes was loved by all who knew her, and was admired for her kindly disposition and gracious manners. She grew old cheerfully and was quite active until just a week before her death, which was caused by an attack of influenza.

Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Edna F. Gordon Funeral Home in Cloverdale. Interment followed in the family plot in the Preston Cemetery.

She leaves to mourn her loss, one daughter, Mrs. Emily Stringall, of St. Helena; a sister, Mrs. Nettie Black, of Morrisonville, Illinois; two grandchildren, Mrs. Ardith Mufich, of Napa; and Alton Greer, of St. Helena; and one great-grandson, James Charles Mufich, of Napa.
