I Pickens Patton was born in Jonesboro, Jefferson County, Alabama on 5 Dec 1821, the son of Samuel Boyd Patton and Sarah D Stephenson. His name is possibly Israel Pickens Patton, as his father was in the State legislature for Walker Co., Al, when governor Israel Pickens was in office. His father had a habit of naming his boys after famous people. We don't know for sure, but several of the transaction do give his initial as I P. He came to Texas along with his father Samuel Boyd Patton and several other siblings about the year 1836, just after the battle for the Alamo. He took out citizenship to the Republic of Texas in Jan 1837 and received several land grants. He married Missouri Estes 5 Jun 1845 in Ellison's Mill, Bowie, Texas. He fought in the Mexican War of 1845 and also the Civil War, first as a Union soldier, but later changing to the Confederate side. He was a Texas Ranger also. He received a pension for his service in the Mexican War. He died at Cherry Creek, near Center Point in Kerr County.

A grandson took me to the area where the grave was supposed to be, but said that many years before that the Guadelupe River had flooded the area and washed many graves away. Whether that is the case here is unknown, but we couldn't find the spot. There was an old school house close by.
