Son of the late Alice Greenfield and Caldwell D. Golden. He had 2 sisters, and a brother, Caldwell Decatur Golden(Jr) (24 Sept 1887-19 Feb 1977). After his parents' deaths, he and his brother went to live with their maternal aunt, Carrie (Golden) Smith, her husband, Louis J Smith, and their grandmother, Maria E Golden, in the District of Columbia
Enlisted in 1917, stationed at Bolling Field outside Washington DC until 1926. Then went to California, then Panama, then to Wheeler Field (island of Oahu, Territory of Hawaii) in May 1941. His barracks was bombed by the Japanese in December 1941, but he escaped injury at that time.

Per "WWII Honor List of Dead and Missing, State of California" published by the War Dept, June 1946, Stephen B Golden was listed as casualty type, DNB defined in the publication as "Other line-of-duty deaths, such as from sickness, homicide, suicide or accidents outside combat areas (including training and manuever deaths) are listed as DNB -- died, non-battle."
