Former state Sen. Leroy S. Bendheim, a Democrat who represented Alexandria in the General Assembly for 12 years, died of cancer Thursday. He was 81.
Mr. Bendheim, an attorney, was elected to the Senate in 1963. Twelve years later he was defeated for a fourth term by then-Mayor Wiley F. Mitchell Jr., a Republican.
Mr. Bendheim died at Alexandria Hospital, where he was admitted June 13.
A native of Alexandria, Mr. Bendheim earned his bachelor's and law degrees at George Washington University. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in France and Belgium.
Mr. Bendheim rose to the chairmanship of the Senate Rehabilitation and Social Services Committee. He also served on the Finance, Commerce and Labor, and Courts of Justice committees.
Mr. Bendheim served on the Alexandria Board of Education for nine years and was chairman for five. He was elected to City Council in 1948 and later served as vice mayor and mayor.
Following his Senate campaign defeat in 1975, Mr. Bendheim was named to the Revenue Resources and Economic Commission by Gov. Mills E. Godwin Jr.
A former president of the Alexandria Bar Association, Mr. Bendheim was an instructor of commercial law at George Washington University Law School. He was a trustee of the B'Nai B'rith Foundation of the United States.
Mr. Bendheim is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Ethel Colman.A service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday at Temple Beth El in Alexandria. Burial will follow at Home of Peace Cemetery.
