PARIS - Ralph Asa Athay, 68, passed away Tuesday, October 5, 1999 in Tooele, Utah. He was born Dec. 5, 1930 at Paris, Idaho, to Asa and Amy Munk Athay. He graduated from Fielding High School, and attended Brigham Young University. Ralph made a career of military service in the U.S. Army and the Marine Corps, during which time he received many meritorious commendations for excellent service. A portion of this service was combat in Korea and Vietnam. He traveled extensively throughout the world, and was a collegiate and professional sports fan. While in the service he played basketball and volleyball, and was a member of the Army's European Division championship volleyball team. Ralph was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Ralph is survived by three sisters, Lois (Robert) Linnell of Ghana, Africa, Ruth (James) Baer of Provo, Utah, Mary Bolton of Tooele, Utah; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother-in-law, Howard Bolton, and a niece, Julie Baer. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 9, at noon in the Bern LDS Chapel, where friends may call that morning from 10 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Paris Cemetery, with services under the direction of Matthews Mortuary of Montpelier.
