Born in Eynon, daughter of the late Max and Helen Schweiger Friedman, she was a graduate of Central High School and went on to get her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan. A member of Temple Israel, she was a tireless volunteer in the community. Matriarch of her family, Ruth was elegant, opinionated and the life of the party. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Surviving are three daughters, Judy Abrams Steinhardt and Ellen Abrams Stossel, both of New York City; and Ann Lutz, Maplewood, N.J.; two sisters, Shirley Greenwald, Scranton; and Tobe Rosner, Rye Brook, N.Y.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Beverly Coplon and Florence Mason.
Funeral services will be today at 1 p.m. in the Ziman Funeral Home Inc., 612 E. Gibson St., Scranton, by Rabbi Dovid Saks. Interment, Temple Israel Cemetery, Dunmore. Shiva will be observed today, 5 to 8 p.m., and Monday, 1 to 6 p.m., at the family home at 550 Clay Ave., Scranton; and Tuesday and Wednesday, 2 to 8 p.m., at the home of her daughter, Judy, 1158 Fifth Ave. and 97th Street, Apartment 16A, New York City. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
