Willard Henry Mathews passed away Sunday at the Dundy County Hospital. He was born June 14, 1899, in Dundy County to John and Nancy (Featherston) Mathews. He was married o Inez Williams in Grant on May 1, 1936.
Mr. Mathews was a lifelong resident of Dundy county and southwest Nebraska. He enjoyed a huge circle of friends during his residence in the region. He and family resided in Stratton for several years and was living in McCook at the time of retirement. later returning to Benkelman to make his home. He was plagued with a respiratory ailment during the last years of his life.
He is survived by his widow, Inez; five sons, Willard of Phoenix, Arizona, Loyal, Gary and Jerry, all of Denver, and Johnny of Benkelman; three daughters, Dorene Purdy of Wauneta, Carolyn Edwards of Benkelman, and Jackie Pascoe of Ogallala; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Roy of El Paso. Texas. and Clifford of Imperial; four sisters, Florence Strobridge of Harbor City, California, Olia Hampton of Imperial, Doris Williams of Alton, Kansas and Grace Cain of Benkelman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, twins, Dennis and Glenis, and Esther and Lorene; two brothers, Joe and Charles; two sisters, Elva and Martha. ..
Services were held at the Jones Funeral Chapel in Benkelman at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 23rd with the Rev. Bob Sander officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sanders were the singers accompanied by organist: Debbie Howard. Pallbearers were Bill Shrum, Francis Baumfalk, Orval Johnson, Wayne Rath, Duaine Todd, and Henry Dicke. Interment was in the Benkelman cemetery under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home.
