Memorial services for William Ike English, 88, of Greensboro, North Carolina, who died 20 July 1998, were held July 22 at West Market Street United Methodist Church with Dr. Randy Waugh officiating.

Mr. English was born 26 January 1912 in Terrell County to the late Daniel Frederick & Ethel Hill English. He graduated from Auburn University in 1933 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering & worked for the Georgia Highway Department for several years. During World War II, he participated in the invasions of the Philippines & Okinawa, was in charge of the logistics & supply planning for the invasion of Japan and did the same for the occupation of Japan. He was awarded two Bronze Stars. Later he served as resident engineer for the building of a VA Hospital in Buffalo, New York. He was discharged in 1948 with the rank of Colonel & moved to Greensboro.

For 28 years, Mr. English was Director of Engineering for Burlington Industries during which time he supervised the design and construction of its corporate headquarters building. In retirement he served as Greensboro's Director of Emergency Preparedness & Board Chairman of Industries for the Blind & on the Greensboro College Board of Visitors. He continued to be active at West Market Street United Methodist Church & in the Greensboro Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, William Ike English, Junior.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eugenia Peacock English; two sons, Roger English of Charlotte, North Carolina & Bret English of Camdenton, Missouri; one daughter, Mrs. Baily Lutman of Virginia Beach, Virginia; nine grandchildren & two great-grandchildren.
