Husband of Elma Alice Hendrickson. She died in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas and was buried on 3 Nov, 1978, at Beaver Crossing Cemetery, Beaver Crossing NE. (from Texas Death Certificates)

Hugh Winfield Bevelhimer Pettijohn was born to George Warren Porter Bevelhimer and Rena May Paine. (In the 1900 census living in Garfield, Phelps County, NE). His birth parents died when he was only 2 yrs old and he was adopted and raised by Fielding Pettijohn and Stella Blanche Paine.

Hugh enlisted on 21 Aug, 1917, in Nebraska, and was honorably discharged on 11 Jul, 1919. His son, Capt. Max L. Pettijohn made application for a flat granite marker with a Latin Cross to be delivered to Big Pine, CA (location of cemetery) on 8 May, 1962. Hugh W. Pettijohn
Hugh W. Pettijohn, son of Dr. Fielding Pettijohn and Stella Blanche Paine was born on 30 April 1899, at Bertrand and departed this life at Bishop, California on 5 May, 1962, at the age of 63 years and 6 days.

He spent his childhood at Beaver Crossing and graduated from high school there. He then served two years with the Armed Forces in France during World War I.

On 24 August, 1920, at Glenwood, Iowa, he was united in marriage with Elma Alice Hendrickson and two sons were born to this union.

After receiving his bachelor of science degree from Kearney State Teachers College, Mr. Pettijohn began his professional career in education. He taught school in the Nebraska and South Dakota areas for many years before moving west. After receiving his master's degree in education at the University of Arizona he moved to the Big Pine, California area where he spent the last 3 years of his life as District Superintendent of the Big Pine Unified schools.

Mr. Pettijohn was very active in community activities such as the Civic club, Lions club, civil defense and American Legion as well as being affiliated with the Masonic order, the Royal Arch masons and the Order of the Eastern Star. He was also an active member of the Big Pine Community Methodist Church. He recently was rewarded for his dedication to his profession by being made a member of Phi Delta Kappa, an honorary society for outstanding educators, and he was also given a lifetime membership of the Parent Teachers Association.

Survivors are his wife, Elma; son, Rex, Minot, North Dakota, son Max, Las Vegas, Max's wife Better; two grandson, Steven and David,and one granddaughter, Darcy Lu, Los Vegas, Nevada.

Funeral services were held in the Big Pine school gymnasium on 10 May with Dr. M. Carson Miles officiating, with the masonic Order and the American Legion assisting. Interment was in the Big Pine cemetery.He was past master of Prudence Lodge No. 60 A. F. & A. M., Beaver Crossing and past patron Prudence Chapter No. 255 OES Beaver Crossing.
