Mary Stone was the oldest daughter of James and Rebecca (Sheldon) Stone of Rhode Island. She married Stephen Parker there and the young couple set off in 1801, with their young son Alvah, to settle in Lackawana (then Luzerne) County, Pennsylvania. They were the very first of the many Parker and Stone family members to settle in and populate Abington, now known as Waverly.
Mary and Stephen were 3rd cousins. Both had Rhode Island roots going back to Stukely Westcott, one of the original settlers of Providence with Roger Wiliams. Stephen's connection was through his mother Tabitha Westcott and Mary's was through her father James, whose mother was Eleanor Westcott.

Eight of the children married and raised their many children in the Abington area.
Four of Mary's brothers, Robert, John, Lemuel, and Samuel, and her sister Celinda settled in Abington in 1802. Her parents relocated to Abington in 1815, following the death of their youngest child, Asenath (1798-1813). They were accompanied by James (1789-1867) and Rebecca (1795-1868) who had remained with their parents in Rhode Island when the other children left the farm in Coventry, RI and settled in Abington.
