Obituary - Nylen Lee Allphin, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, seminary teacher and friend, passed peacefully from this world of natural causes, on Aug. 28th at the home of his daughter, Bonnie, in Eagle, Idaho.

He was born Sept. 26, 1915 in Lovell, Wyoming to George Kerry and Myra Asay Allphin. He was the sixth of ten children and attended schools in Lovell, participated in drama, football, basketball, and track.

He married Grace Phyllis Hassell on July 9th, 1936 in the Manti, LDS Temple.

He graduated from the University of Wyoming in Education and was a principal and coach in Big Piney, Wyoming; then superintendent of schools and coach in Burlington, Wyoming before moving back to Lovell to work as a chemist for Ohio Oil Co.

After moving to Lovell, he began teaching seminary for the LDS Church Education System, a job he held in various capacities for 35 years in Lovell, Byron, Cowley and later in Orem, Utah. While in Lovell, he was ordained a Seventy and was instrumental in building apartment houses that supported full-time missionaries.

He worked during the summers at a Japanese Internment Camp at Hart Mountain during World War II and felt deeply the injustice of that program.

He served as Police Judge and Justice of the Peace for nine years and ran for the Wyoming state Senate in 1948. He was active in politics in both Wyoming and Utah. He completed a Masters degree in Education at BYU, working by correspondence and summer programs. After he moved his family to Orem, Utah in 1957, he bought a fruit orchard and farmed during the summer months.

He was instrumental in starting the summer youth programs for the LDS Church, which are now known as Especially for Youth (EFY). He was active in church youth programs for many years as a dance instructor with his wife, Grace and was also a square dance caller. He served on many high councils and as a gospel doctrine teacher.

After Grace passed away in 1977, he married Zillah Butcher, of Fruit Heights, Utah in Dec. 1980. They served a full time mission to the Texas San Antonio Mission where they worked in Gatesville, Texas with inmates of the Texas prison system among other assignments.

Nylen loved the out of doors. He hunted and fished with his family all his life. He loved Yellowstone National Park and taught the world to fly-fish the Yellowstone River. For over 50 years he never missed the opening of the Yellowstone on July 15th. He was also an avid BYU fan and was a veritable institution for many years at both football and basketball games.

He is survived by his wife, Zillah Allphin; children: Nylen Lee Jr. (Gail), Phyllis Ann Meadows, Elizabeth Fern Oliphant (Norman), Jessie Adelia Farr (Gordon), Marilyn Miller, Robert Louis (Julie), David Johannes (Linda), Bonnie Jean Caldwell (Lee), and Donovan Owen (Jeri); 58 grandchildren and 104 great grandchildren.
