Alexander Collins was a resident of Winterset, Madison County, Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private on Oct. 21, 1865 at the age of 18 years. He mustered in Co I 4th Iowa Cavalry on Dec. 5, 1861. Collins became a "reenlisted veteran" on Dec. 18, 1863. Promoted to Full Bugler on May 14, 1864. Mustered out on Aug. 8, 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia, as "absent on detached service with Colored troops since Apr. 8, 1865," but was commissioned 1st Lieutenant Co E 138th U.S. Colored Infantry to date July 15, 1865." Mustered out Jan. 6, 1866.
