RIDGELAND - George Robert Alford, 88, a retired school administrator, died Wednesday at a Beaufort hospital. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Ridgeland Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Sauls Funeral Home, will be in Ridgeland Cemetery.
Mr. Alford was born in Dillon County, a son of Leroy B. Alford and Sarah Reaves Alford. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of Dillon High School, the University of Oklahoma with bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of South Carolina. He attended Harvard University.
Mr. Alford was a former elementary and high school principal and superintendent of schools with Dillon County. He was a former superintendent with Jasper County. He was a retired area superintendent with Horry County. He was a member of the S.C. Education Association, the National Education Association and American Association of School Administrators. He was named in the Who's Who in American Educational Administration. He was a former president of Dillon and Jasper county Education Associations, the executive committee of the S.C. Association of School Administrators and the 6th District S.C. High School Leagues.
Mr. Alford was a member and former president of Lions International in Dillon, Lake View, Ridgeland and Loris. He was a Mason, a past master and Grand Marshall of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina, a Grand Representative of the United Grand Lodge of England In and Near the Grand Lodge of South Carolina and a member of the American Legion.
He was vice-chairman of the first Board of Directors of Sergeant Jasper Golf Course and Country Club. He was an active member of Ridgeland Baptist Church and the widower of Lucy Hall Alford.
Surviving are a daughter, Sarah Ann Horton of Hampton; a son, G. Robert Alford Jr. of Mount Pleasant; and four grandchildren.
