Birth:
William Melville Brown was born in Baillieston, Lanark, Scotland on 13 April 1844 to John Brown and Mary Cook. He was christened on 5 May 1844 in the parish of Crosshill, Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland (1).

Migration:
He immigrated to America at the age of 5 aboard the Cora Linn with his parents John Brown & Mary Brown and his brother Walter, arriving at New York on 19 Jul 1949 (2). He and his family were back in Scotland by 15 January 1850 including his new little brother, Adam, born in Buffalo, New York on 6 Sep 1849 (3). He then immigrated a second time to the United States aboard the ship, George Washington, with his mother, Mary Cook Brown, and 3 brothers: Walter, Adam, and David arriving Boston, Massachussetts on 20 April 1857(4). They proceeded from Iowa City, Iowa with the Israel Evans Handcart Company departing between 22-23 May 1857 and arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah between 11-12 Sep 1857 (5).
