U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, in 1891, he later attended Waynesburg College and graduated from the agricultural department of Pennsylvania State College, in 1915. During World War I, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 47th Regiment, U.S. Army Infantry. After the war, he engaged in the general contracting business, (1919-26), attended United States Army Command and General Staff School, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1930 and was a broker of oil and gas properties, (1926-33). In 1933, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until his resignation in 1942. He then served as a Colonel in the U.S. Army, during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medals. After the war, he moved to Mexico, raised cattle, producing oil, gas and operating coal mines until his death at age 81.
