Dr. Samuel P. Bonasso, 78, of Shinnston, died of cancer Sunday, July 21, 2002, at the Madison Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Morgantown.
He was born April 22, 1924, in Bingamon, a son of the late Francesco Saverio and Josephine Audia Bonasso.

Dr. Sam was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II. In 1946, he graduated from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. In 1948, he moved to Russellville, Ky., established a dental practice and worked there until he moved his family to West Virginia in 1969. After years of practicing dentistry at several locations in the Fairmont-Monongah area, he retired. He enjoyed golfing and loved being with people. He was a Roman Catholic by faith, and he was a member of St. Ann's Parish in Shinnston.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank Bonasso and Paula Hudson, of Denver, Colo., and John and Debbie Bonasso, of Fairmont; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Therese Bonasso, of Morgantown, Mary Jo and David Ellis, of Pewee Valley, Ky., and Patty and Mike Byrd, of Crestwood, Ky.; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Russell F. and Julia Bonasso, of Fairmont, Jack and Dee Bonasso, of Carolina, Bill and Mary Bonasso, of Detroit, Mich.; Pete Bonasso, of Florida, and Jane Bonasso, of Fairmont; one sister, Lucia D'Annunzio, of Clarksburg; nine grandchildren, Jessica Bonasso, Stewart Ellis, Jamie Ellis Stocker, Brian Ellis, Abbey, Elizabeth, and Andrew Bonasso, Ami Gullett and Michael Byrd; 33 nieces and nephews; two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Madison Gullett; and a companion, Mabel June Harbert.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia "Kay" Bonasso; a son, Thomas Samuel Bonasso; and an infant brother, Pietro Bonasso.

Friends may call the Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Ave., Fairmont, on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and on Thursday 1-9 p.m. A vigil service will be held Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral Mass will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Shinnston with Fathers Karl Wohinc and Lino Ebejer officiating. Burial will be at the Masonic Cemetery in Shinnston.
