Vanport was a town built next to the great Columbia River, near Portland, to house the many tens of thousands of shipyard workers during World War II. Not long after the war, in 1948, a dike broke holding back Columbia River flood waters and the town was totally destroyed with very little loss of life. It was never rebuilt and had been the second largest city in Oregon.
