William was the son of Kinchen H. Thomas and Sarah Weeks Thomas who moved from Fayetteville, North Carolina to Campbell County, Ga. (now known as South Fulton), then Decatur, Ga. and then Mableton, Cobb County Ga. William married Harriet Rebecca Moss on August 7, 1874 in Cobb County, Georgia. William and Harriet had five children: Cliff R., Charles, Rufus Ira, Lucy Elizabeth, and Willie Thomas Chupp Quote from The Marietta Journal, Thursday, October 12, 1882:"A young man named Wm. J. Thomas, living at the time near Concord factory in this county, on last Saturday, had the sad fate to get his hand caught in a cotton gin, mangling his arm so horribly that amputation was deemed necessary, but the poor fellow was unable to survive the operation and he died."Wife Harriet died at the age of 26, a little over a year after William. Their children were raised by Harriet's parents, Alfred Young Moss and Sarah Brooks Moss. Harriet came from a large family, and her father Alfred Young Moss is buried at Crestlawn Cemetery in Atlanta along with Harriet's much younger sisters Montie and Lillie. Siblings who died around the time of Harriet's death are buried in Concord Cemetery in Smyrna. Researching where William and Harriet are buried and Harriet's cause of death.
