Margaret A. Mullen, daughter of Patrick Mullen and Ellen Carr, was baptized at the Church of Ss. Peter and Paul, South Boston, 14 October 1847. Her parents died when she was young and she was raised by cousins. Before marriage, she was head soloist (soprano) at St. Augustine's Church. She was married 2 May 1877 at St. James the Greater Church, Boston, to John Bernard McAleer of Boston, and they raised 5 surviving children in Jamaica Plain.
