Thomas emigrated from Oberhausen Germany in 1880, according to the 1910 US Census and Ellis Island records. He was a naturalized citizen in 1910.His movements are not known for sure, but he worked for the railroad for a number of years in various states. He obtained 320 acres of land near Nardin, Oklahoma in one of the Oklahoma "land runs". By all accounts he became a prosperous farmer. Thomas purchased property in and near Deer Park Washington and moved his family there by train in early 1908. The farm was located north of Deer Park on what is now known as Arlington Road and the home in Deer Park. That home burned in 1920 and was rebuilt at 3rd and Arnim. Thomas lost the farm property to foreclosure, then worked for the railroad in Ellensburg Washington where he later died. Thomas was a 32nd degree Mason. The family home remained in Deer Park for Julia and the children. The house still stands today, along with Julia's ancient lilac bush.
