When my grandmother, Eula [McGowan] Carnella, first spoke to me about her grandmother Martha Risinger, her excitement and enthusiasm was contagious. It was no surprise that I felt the same passion while searching for more information on Martha. She passed away when Eula was only 15 years old so it was no wonder she wanted to know more about her.
Martha was born in Gibson Co., Indiana in 1855; the tenth child and fourth daughter of John and Eliza (nee: Farmer) Faries. Her parents married May 12, 1836 in Warrick Co., Indiana. For years I couldn't verify that Eliza and John were her parents until I went through each Gibson, IN census page on microfilm. I was lucky they still lived in the same town.
By 1870, Eliza Faries had lost her husband John and moved the family to Saline Co., Illinois. I have always thought that John had lost his life while fighting in the Civil War but I have no proof. Listed in her household was her 15 year old daughter, Martha, who showed married to 20 year old Stephen Risinger from Kentucky. And next door was another daughter, 17 year old Ruth Ann, who showed married to 26 year old John A. Vessels from Kentucky. Also with her was Joel, age 21, and (David) Monroe, age 10.
By 1887, Martha and Stephen had moved west to Duck Creek in Stoddard Co., Mo. with nine children.
