David Prentice Smith
David Prentice Smith, age 69, died Tuesday, August 23, 2011 in Odessa, TX after a brief illness. He was born December 13, 1941 in Snyder, TX to Prentice Elmer and Ruth Gertrude (Irion) Smith.

David spent his early childhood in Arkansas, but his family returned to West Texas where he grew up. He graduated from Snyder High School in 1960. He then attended Cisco Junior College. While in Cisco, he met and married the love of his life, Kathryn Ann Forman. They married September 4, 1962 at the 14th Street Church of Christ in Cisco.

After their wedding, they moved to College Station, where David received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Texas A&M University. The first in his family to earn a four-year college degree, David dedicated his career to education. He began his teaching career at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School in Beeville. He then accepted a position at Kermit High School in 1969, where he taught a variety of subjects, but was best known as the school's freshman English teacher. He was best known among his students for bringing Shakespeare, Poe and Coleridge to life and instilling a life-long love of literature and writing for many. He had a gift for helping advanced students shine, but he was especially dedicated to those who needed extra help and might have been left behind if Mr. Smith had not intervened.

David's teaching talent extended beyond the classroom and benefited many through his lessons at Eastside Church of Christ in Kermit, as well as the Wink and Jal Church of Christ. He was a dedicated, devout Christian who was active in the bus ministry, youth programs and benevolence. He also served as a deacon at the Eastside Church of Christ for many years. He was a member of the Jal Church of Christ at the time of his death and was active in teaching there, as well as at the Wink Church of Christ.

David's favorite activities included hunting, fishing, camping and woodworking; however, his love of family ran deepest of all, and he always put their interest ahead of his own.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Prentice and Ruth Smith, and by his firstborn son, Des, who died in infancy.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kathy Ann Forman Smith of Kermit; daughter: Darla Willis and husband Nat of Jal, NM; daughter: Darah Waldrip and husband Matt of Abilene; son: Darin Smith of Plano; grandson: Brandon Willis and wife Rebekah of Lubbock; grandson: Zachary Willis of Lubbock; granddaughter: Lucy Waldrip of Abilene, TX and a great-grandchild that is expected in the spring. He is also survived by his brother: Dan Smith and wife Karen of San Angelo and his sister: Dayna Cline and husband David of San Angelo, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Services will be held at Eastside Church of Christ in Kermit at 2:00 pm Friday, August 26, 2011. Interment will follow at Kermit Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the New Mexico Christian Children's Home of Portales.

Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.
