Elizabeth married the second son of Jacob Stroud, founder of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. When Jacob's first son married, he built a mansion for him and his new daughter-in-law. That son only lived in the house for a few years.

Daniel and Eliza, as she was called, then moved into the mansion where she lived until her death. Daniel remarried in 1911 and continued to live in the house. It remained in the Stroud family for 98 years before being donated to the county. It is now a historic house museum.

The Sampler that was sewn by Elizabeth D. Shoemaker at age 14 is shown in the photo section of this memorial page. Below is the transcription of the handwritten text on paper affixed to the back of the Sampler’s frame. It is shown with punctuation, line spacing, abbreviations, et al, exactly as written. The top three lines were centered. The writing appears to be done by three different hands, as if information was added through her life and death.
