The son of Peter & Sarah Catherine (Redmond) Day, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Conewago Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 28, 1862, as a private with Co. A, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 8, 1863. He then enlisted in Harrisburg June 25, 1863, mustered into federal service there June 29 as a private with Co. F, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa), and honorably discharged with his company January 6, 1864. He last enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 3, 1864, as a private with Co. E, 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry (119th Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 29, 1865.
He married Regina Emma Wise ca. 1866 and fathered Charles (b. 10/??/69), Alden A. (b. 03/29/71), Emma Lucetta (b. 02/25/77 - married Samuel Webster Reist), and Peter (b. ?). He died from "acute cardiac dilatation" with "bronchial asthma" a contributing factor.
