Dick Dwayn Fox, son of Llewellyn and Frances (Godderz) Fox, was born and raised in Mason City, Iowa. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1945 but left school early to enlist in the U.S. Navy during the second world war. Dick received his naval training at the Great Lakes and served as a fireman first class aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt on its shakedown voyage through the Panama Canal. After his discharge, he returned to Mason City and worked in his father's business, the Mason City Roofing Company. In 1965, he purchased the company from his father and served as president and treasurer of the firm until he retired in 1990. Dick was a member of Trinity Luthern Church, where he served as an usher and on the Board of Buildings and Grounds. He was a member of the American Legion, Rockwell Post.

Dick married Mary Catherine (Kate) Doolan in April 12, 1948 at St. Joeseph's Catholic Church in Mason City. In 1998, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversity on Jekyll Island, Georgia. Dick and Kate had two children, Steven Richard and Ellen Ann.

Dick D. Fox, 72, of 9 Asbury Place, Mason City, former owner and operator of Mason City Roofing, died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. His body was cremated. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylva nia Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Nils "Chris" Hellevik officiating. A flag presentation will be conducted at the church by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Dick Dwayn Fox was born on May 27, 1927, in Mason City, son of Llewellyn and Frances (Godderz) Fox. He was a 1945 graduate of Mason City High School and attended Mason City Junior College before enlisting in the U.S. Navy at Great Lakes, where he received his naval training. He served as a fireman first class aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt on its shakedown voyage through the Panama Canal. After his discharge, he returned to Mason City and worked in his father's business, Mason City Roofing Company. Dick purchased the company in 1965 and served as president and treasurer of the firm, retiring in 1990. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mrs. Albert (Bernice) Cinkle and Mrs. Paul (Elizabeth) Poppen; and two brothers, Kenneth Fox and the Rev. Robert Fox O.S.B. Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Dick enlisted into the Navy on March 19, 1945 and discharged on July 20, 1946. He left the U.S. on Oct. 20, 1945 to serve in the second world war and returned to the U.S. on July 20, 1946. He served on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, the second of three Midway-class aircraft carriers.
