US NAVY WWIIBARBER, Durwood R. "Doc", age 87 of Flint, died August 22, 2011. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, August 26, 2011 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Burial will follow in Flint Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Those desiring may make contributions to Grace Hospice.

Mr. Barber was born May 8, 1924 in Lansing. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in WWII. He was married to Jeanette Schiestel on June 27, 1970 in Grand Blanc; she preceded him in death on February 23, 2011.

Mr. Barber retired from General Motors in 1971. He had also worked as a police officer in Flushing. He was a life member and past Commander of the Flushing VFW. He was also a life member of National VFW Hall and the Elks Club in Lake Wales, FL. Surviving are: children, Susanna (Robert) Kost of Grand Blanc, Richard (Sharon) Barber of Flushing, Jack (Mary) Barber of Clinton Twp., Randolph (Pat) Scheick of Lake Wales, FL; daughter-in-law, Donna Barber; grandchildren, Angela Withem, Matthew (Beth) Withem, Ryan (Jen) Barber, Cameron Barber; great-grandson, Henry Barber. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Laura Barber Compton and Deamus Jennings. Special thanks to American House North and the med team, Sugarbush House, owner and staff and Grace Hospice.
