William J. Adkins never knew for sure his birthdate or place or the names of his parents & siblings. His whole family was killed during a raid on their wagon train when he was very young. He was in the Battle of the Washita in Co. G. 19th Kansas Volunteers with Custer's 7th Cavalry in Oklahoma Territory in 1868 in Roger Mills County. His grandson's remember that at his funeral he was represented by many Mason members and it was quite a ceremony. He married Mary Etta Dunlap in 1872 in Hill Co. TX. They were in Ok Terr before 1900, parents of Susan C. (Hankins), M. Annie (Morris), Elmira (Flanary), Archibald, Mary Etta (Morton) and Lafayette 'Fate' Adkins.
