Martha Lash Alexander lived an active and independent life. She stayed in her own home in Bay Village until she was 92, then moved to Westlake Village in Westlake.

As a young woman, she enjoyed horseback riding in Cleveland MetroParks and ice skating outdoors at what is now Winterhurst in Lakewood.

Mrs. Alexander died Tuesday at the Westbay Manor Nursing Home in Westlake. She was 96.

She was born in Polk, Ohio, and graduated from Ashland High School in 1916. She attended Kent State University, then completed the School of Nursing at St. Luke's Hospital in Cleveland.

In 1922, she married Everett Alexander, a dentist. They made their home in Lakewood and later in Bay Village.

After her husband died in 1959, Mrs. Alexander traveled and collected bells from around the world. She was active in the American Bell Association that includes collectors, ringers, dealers and enthusiasts. It provides scholarship in bell studies. Mrs. Alexander attended meetings of the organization in the United States and abroad.

Mrs. Alexander served on the Women's Board of Fairview General Hospital for more than 40 years and on the board of the Bay Village Women's Club.

A son, James E., is deceased.

Mrs. Alexander is survived by sons, Richard L. of Lindale, Texas, Philip and Roger, both of Rocky River; daughter, Marilyn Low of Dayton; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
