John was the son of Horace Chilton Cook and Ethel Hunnam Cook. He was the twin of Minnie T. Cook. John was the husband of Kathryn Marie Spradlin Cook.
John was the 9th great grandson of Stephen Hopkins of the Mayfloer and 8th great grandson of Mayflower passenger Giles Hopkins. Stephen Hopkins was a signer of the Mayflower Compact. In 1609, Stephen Hopkins left England for Jamestown, Virginia when the Sea Venture was shipwrecked of the coast of Bermuda. In 1610, Stephen Hopkins finally arrived in Jamestown.
Two of John's ancestors are documented Daughters of the American Revolution soldiers and patriots. These ancestors are Jesse Cook and John Cole.
