Despite the tombstone inscription, Thomas was shown as born in 1812 in Whitburn, West Lothian to Alexander Thompson and Janet Muir, according to birth and baptismal records for the parish. In fact, Alexander and Janet were married there and all four children I have located were born in Whitburn. It is always possible the birth was in Glasgow and recorded in Whitburn.

Thomas married Agnes Graham, who died before 1850. This is proved by the Illinois death certificate of their son, Alexander Graham (March 17, 1843-Feb. 21, 21 Feb 1937 ), who was born in Switzerland County and died in Douglas County, Ill.
