Mrs. Helena Lundeen, one of the oldest women in North America and a former resident of Chisago County and recently of St. Paul died last Thursday evening, October 16, 1959 at the remarkable age of 105 years, 9 mo, and 28 days. Only 1 other Chisago County resident has gone over 100 according to available records, that a person being the late Uncle John Dobney of Taylors Falls who went a year or two over the century milestone. Death came easily and quickly to Mrs. Lundeen, whose long life of interest and accomplishment was outstanding.

Helen (nee Fagerstrom) Lundeen, who has been the oldest member of the Chisago Lake Evangelical Lutheran Church of Center City, MN was born Dec. 17, 1853 in Ostra Torsas, Kronobergs Lan, Sweden. She was baptized in that same year and was later confirmed in Sweden.

She came to America in 1879, eventually coming to this area of Minnesota. Three years later, on Feb 5, 1881, she began the bride of John Alfred Lundeen, being married at Chisago City. The couple farmed south of Chisago City.

They were members of Zion Lutheran Church in Chisago City until 1910 when they became members of the Chisago Lake Lutheran Church at Center City where they have belonged since.

Ten children were given to this union as follows:

Carl Kalispel, MT, Elna (Mrs. Herman) Elmer of Sy. Paul, Theodore on the home farm south of Lindstrom, Edna in St. Paul( with whom Mrs. Lundeen made her home); Alvin, Lindstrom, MN, Esther, Los Angeles, CA, Eleanor (Mrs. Elmer) Bloom, Center City, Ethel, St. Paul, who together with Edna has made a home for Mrs. Lundeen.

Two daughters preceded Mrs. Lundeen in death, Anna who died in infancy and the other Clara, who passed away as a young girl. Her own husband John Alfred Lundeen, departed this life on Sept 4, 1922.

Mrs. Lundeen was the last of her family generation, there being no brothers or sisters surviving.

Five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren together with many nieces and nephews survive her.

Following the death of her husband in 1922, Mrs. Lundeen lived with her children in this area until 1928, when she moved to St. Paul to make her home with her daughters, Edna and Ethel Lundeen and for whom until she was about 100 years of age, she was delighted and pleased to keep the home for her working daughters.

Funeral services were conducted from the Chisago Lake Lutheran Church, Center City on Monday afternoon, October 19. Officiating was Rev. W. Burdette Benson and Rev. Hugo Thoreen. The latter pastor was Mrs. Lundeen's latest spiritual minister, and in the past served the Center City congregation between its last two pastors. Pastor Thoreen and Mrs. Lundeen were friends from Sweden. They have been associated in a close way, in that when Pastor Thoreen was baptized in Sweden, Mrs. Lundeen then Helena Fagerstrom was his godmother. “It is Good,” said Rev. Benson. “That the young boy that received spiritual care and concern of Helena Fagerstrom, and who in these last years has been Mrs. Lundeen's spiritual minister, should preach the sermon at this service.

Pallbearers were: Elwood Lundeen, Rev. Vernal Lundeen, John Bloom, James Strum, Carl Johnson, and Oliver Johnson. Mr. Glen Lovestrand was the organist and Mrs. Telfred Johnson was the soloist. Interment was made at Fairview Cemetery.
