Mattie Lavonia Middleton married Stephen Harrison Owens on October 12, 1912 at Concord Methodist Church in Conecuh County, Alabama.

The marriage was a double wedding ceremony shared with her step-sister Birdie Cook, who married Joseph Warner 'Joe' Byrd Oct 12, 1912.

Mattie designed and made both of their wedding dresses.
She was a very talented lady, sewing many of the clothes of her other sisters, her children and some of her grandchildren.

Many of the clothes were made from feed sacks and flour sacks, this was the custom of the day.

She enjoyed sewing, and when making clothes for some of her grandchildren, would also make the same for their dolls. She made each of her grandchildren 3 quilts.

She assisted her husband, raising strawberries which they sold to the Dairy Queen. And, eventually running the country store, S H Owens Grocery in Conecuh County, Alabama.

Her brother-in-law, William E Harper showed them how to keep the books for the country store. She said he was very good with figures.

Many came to enjoy sitting and eating with Mattie and Harrison. She cooked both breakfast and dinner on a little pot bellied stove in the back of the country store.
Those in the store at mealtime, joined in eating with the family.

Some who came to the country store would spend the full day visiting, then buy their groceries.

Many came to learn their family history from Mattie Owens. It seemed her and Harrison were related to almost everyone who came by.

Whenever Mattie met someone, she always asked, Now who were your parents. As she traveled their family tree, she would always find some connection.

When Mattie was in her 80's she had the pleasure of traveling for the first time on an airplane, and visiting California.

Her granddaugher's friends rented a wheelchair, sat her in it, and two of the guys would simply pick up the wheel chair and carry it in the air.

She ate Japaneese food for the first time, saw the Pacific Ocean in Malibu, California, and took the train from Los Angeles to San Diego, and visited the San Diego Zoo.

Her comments: People in LA do not have legs, they have cars. And, she could not get over people living in houses in such close proximity to each other.

Her favorite song: Dwelling in Beulah Land
