Mrs. John B. Harte Is Dead at Age 75
Mrs. Alice Eileen (McDermott) Harte, 75, of 217 West Main St., widow of John B. Harte, both of whom were owners and operators of the old Opera House, Harte and Stark Theaters here for a long period, died Sunday at Warner Nursing HOme after many years of frail health.
Mrs. Harte was born in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., the daughter of John and Mary Ann (Whitney) McDermott. The family came to Bennington when she was a child and she had attended Bennington schools. She was a graduate of Albany Business College and had served as a legal secretary, having been employed by several local law firms.
She was married to Mr. Harte in 1917 at St. Francis de Sales Church and they had made their home here since. Mr. Harte died in 1936. The Hartes had owned the theater properties in Bennington since the silent movie days and were responsible for bringing to Bennington's Opera House many of the top Broadway stage shows, Sousa's band, opera stars, including Geraldine Farrar, and many of the vaudeville stars. She had carried on with assistance of members of her family following Mr. Harte's death and was active until her health forced her to refrain.
She was a member of the local court of Catholic Daughters of America and a communicant of St. Francis de Sales Church.
Deeply devoted to her home, she was also known for her hospitality. Her indomitable courage in her illness will be remembered.
She leaves two sons, Atty. John B.Harte, former state senator, town representative and municipal judge; Charles G. Harte, who is engaged in real estate enterprises; three daughters, Mrs. Edward Peary (Marie) Stafford of Sparta, N.J., whose husband, Cmdr. Stafford, is a grandson of Admiral Peary and of Wendell Stafford of St. Johnsbury, former Vermont Supreme Court judge and later Federal Circuit Court of Appeals judge in Washington; Mrs. William A. (Barbara) Hurley of Bennington and Mrs. Henry D. (Eileen) Whittle of Danville, Va.; 25 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 9 am in St. Francis de Sales Church. The family will be in attendance at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm today. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 8 pm. Interment will be in Park Lawn Cemetery.
