Apparently the headstone is incorrect on the year of birth, as several documents on Ancestry, including his WWI Draft Card (which included information obtained from him personally) indicates the correct year to be 1889. If he had been born in 1899, he would have been too young to be subject to the WWI draft. He was a member of the 339th Infantry "Polar Bear Expedition" to Northern Russia in WWI.
