Durward G. Lawrence, age 89, of Tomah, Wisconsin, passed away Saturday August 20, 2011, at the Mayo Clinic Healthcare Center in Sparta, Wisconsin. He was born October 19, 1921 in Corwith, Iowa to George and Margaret (Destri) Lawrence. On June 2, 1946, he was united in marriage to Elda Mae (Wallace) Albrecht.

Durward served in the United States Army in WWII and also served many years in the National Guard. He worked at Camp Williams for many years until his retirement. In his early years he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid reader throughout his life. He and Elda enjoyed spending time with their family and friends.

Durward is survived by his son, Timothy (Rosemary) Lawrence of Tomah, WI, a step-son, Danny (Donna) Albrecht of Tomah, WI, a son-in-law, Jerold Stouffer of Wyoming, a brother, Ronald (Nancy) Lawrence of Camp Douglas, WI, a sister, Laurene Gebczyk of Tomah, WI, 14 grandchildren and many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Margaret, wife, Elda on July 21, 2011, a son, Steven Lawrence, a daughter, Annette Stouffer, and two sisters, Georgia Tucker and Thelma Coleman.

Funeral services with military honors were held Wednesday, August 24, 2011, 4:00 p.m. at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah. A private family burial was held at Oak Grove Cemetery at a later date. Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah assisted the family with arrangements.

Memorials were asked to be given to the Tomah Boys and Girls Club or the Tomah Public Library, he loved to read.
