MRS. B. B. JOHNSON

Mrs. Sarah Jane (Laymon) Johnson, 73 years old, widow of Byron Bancroft Johnson, founder of the American League baseball organization, was found dead in bed at her home on N. Washington St., Spencer, last Thursday morning. About eight o'clock Thursday morning Dewey Mathes, Mrs. Johnson's Chauffeur, called at the Johnson home. Mrs. Johnson had been in the habit of locking her door and when Mathes could not gain entrance and could not arouse her he immediately got a ladder and looked through the transom. Seeing that she was dead, he immediately called a local doctor. Mr. Mathes climbed through the transom and unlocked the door.

The doctor stated that he believed Mrs. Johnson had died about 5 o'clock and gave as the cause of her death cerebral hemorrhage.

The town was shocked to learn of her death, for she had apparently been in fairly good health and had attended the Tivoli Theatre the night before and was apparently in good health when she retired.

She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sam Laymon, and was born near Freedom. She was the last survivor of three sons and daughters born to this couple.

The couple was married in 1892 in Cincinnati, O., and lived there for a number of years, later going to Chicago. Mr. Johnson served as American League president until 1927, when he resigned, and he and Mrs. Johnson moved to Spencer in 1931. He died March 29, 1931 in a St. Louis hospital. Mrs. Johnson has continued to make her home here since his death.

Survivors include five nephews and nieces - Ernest Teagardin, Bloomington; Frank Teagardin, Indianapolis; Mrs. Bertha Massey, Lafayette; Mrs. Fred M. Parks, Murraysville, Pa., and Louis Laymon of Evansville.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the West Funeral home, with Rev. Kenneth Brady in charge. Burial was made in Riverside Cemetery in the Johnson mausoleum. Mr. Johnson is also buried in Riverside Cemetery.

Pall bearers were Dewey Mathes, H. B. Laymon, W. G. Moss, Oscar Spear, William Maupin and Dr. L. O. Fish.
