He was born Feb. 1, 1923, in Watson Township, Mich. He was one of seven children born to John and Hazel Ashley. He was a mechanical engineer who worked for both the Whirlpool Corp. and Burgess Norton of Geneva. He was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, genealogy, woodworking, puzzles, and photography. He was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2515 in Allegan.
He was affectionately known as "Grandpa Faraway" by his brother Frank's children, Denise, Stephen and Dawn, and their children.
He is survived by his son, Michael A. (Roberta) Ashley of Woodstock; a grandson, John (Kathy) Ashley of New York, N.Y.; a sister, Opal (John) Stowe of Watervliet, Mich.; a brother, Frank (Donna) Ashley of St. Joseph; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; a grandson, Michael R. Ashley; and by his siblings, Pearl Clawson, Leo and Arlene.
A memorial Mass celebrating his life will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 211 Church St., in St. Joseph. The Rev. Christopher Ankley will officiate. Burial will follow at Hickory Bluff Cemetery in Stevensville.
