Gale "Abe" Abernathey Jr., 58, of Brownsville died unexpectedly May 20, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

He was born in Whittier, Calif., the son of Gale Stanley Abernathey Sr. and Marion (Dickey) Abernathey.

He moved to Oregon in 1960. Gale graduated from South Eugene High School in 1963.

He served in the First Air Cavalry in the Army during the Vietnam War, serving from 1967 to 1969.

Gale worked as a licensed water well driller for more than 35 years and had been employed the past seven years by Western Water Development in Redmond.

Gale married Barbara Briney on Nov. 3, 1979, in Philomath. The couple lived in Klamath Falls for 12 years and was currently living in Brownsville.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Abernathey of Brownsville; parents Gale Stanley Abernathey Sr. and Marion (Dickey) Abernathey of Eugene; sister Linda Ake of Keizer; niece Jennifer Galbreath; aunt Betty George; and cousins Brad and Brian George, Margaret Armentraut, Susan Miller, and Lucy Cota.

A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. June 6, at Brownsville Pioneer Park in Brownsville. Huston-Jost Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Oregon Ground Water Association Scholarship Fund, Boy Scouts of America Eugene Chapter or National Kidney Foundation.
