Mrs. Maria A. Barbour
On the morning of July 21, 1916, Mrs. Maria A. Barbour died at her home in New Paris, at the age of 87 years, 6 months and 29 days.
She was a daughter of Joseph W. and Isabel (Frame) Sleek, and was the oldest of a family of three sons and nine daughters; only two survive, Mrs. W.V. Taylor of Schellsburg, and Mrs. Rufus P. Wright of Wilmerding.
She married Samuel Barbour who served as a soldier in the Mexican War and also in the Civil War; he preceded her in death in February of 1904.
They raised a family of twelve children. The following survive their parents: William H. Barbour, Adison H. Barbour, George H. Barbour, and Edward R. Barbour of Washington, D.C.; Joseph Barbour of California, and Mrs. Irene Ralston of New Paris.
The deceased was a consistent member of the M.E. Church the greater part of her life.
She was known for her kindness, especially to the poor and was a liberal contributor to the cause of the Master in whom she so much trusted.
Her funeral, which occurred on Sunday morning, at her home, was conducted by her pastor, Rev. S.H. Engles. A large concourse of relatives and friends assembled to pay her the last tribute of respect, such as an aged, Christian mother is worthy.
Interment was made in the cemetery at Horn's Church.
The pall bearers were: Dr. H.L. Shoenthal, S.H. Mickel, Jackson Crissman, Hall Davis, Albert Penrose and Winter Davis.
"Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."
