Charles S. Foss, the son of Inga (Holen) and Oscar Foss, was born on March 7, 1918 in Cabri, Saskatchewan, Canada. He moved to Roseau with his family when he was 4 years old and he attended school in Ross Township.
He worked for area farmers and in the woods and then joined the Army on March 19, 1941. He went to England on December 16, 1943 and landed in France on D-Day. He served until October 9, 1945 and was honorably discharged with medals of Honor. He received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and a Bronze Service Arrowhead. He served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe.
After Charles was discharged from the service, he farmed near Badger for the remainder of his life.
He and Lila Mae Haaby were united in marriage on March 10, 1949. To this marriage four children were born, Sandra, Gail, Gary and Bruce. He was a member of the Badger V.F.W. and a member of the Badger Creek Free Lutheran Church. Charles especially enjoyed old time jamborees and dancing.
Charles passed away on December 14, 2007 at his home in Badger, MN. He was 89 years old.
