Nancy was born in Tennessee but moved to Missouri in January 1856 with her family. She met Alfred Hamilton Gibbens while living in Marshfield and married him there on 16 March 1859 at the home of her soon-to-be brother-in-law, the Reverend Giles PR VanZandt. Reverend VanZandt also performed the service.

The Gibbens traveled by ox team over the Central Overland Trail, through Wyoming and onto to Gold Hill and Silver City, Nevada, departing from Missouri about June or July of 1861. Son Robert Lee Gibbens was born in Silver City on December 1865. They moved to California sometime in 1866 and lived in Forestville (near St. Helena) and later Sonoma. Nancy was moved to San Francisco by train near the end of her life to be taken care of by her daughters. Son, Sidney, and granddaughter, Barbara, came down to put her on the train since Nancy had to be transferred by stretcher because she was too weak to walk. She died in daughter Adeline Hooke's home in 1916.

Alfred and Nancy likely traveled to California across the overland route with Nancy's brother, John Wesley McCormmach. JW lived with Nancy in Alfred in Ozark Township, Webster, MO in 1860. According to this website (http://www.ozarkscivilwar.org) many Pro-Union folks in Webster County departed for Rolla (or points west) due to Confederate ranging and didn't return until after the war. Most were gone by August 1861. Alfred and Nancy are listed in the Silver City directory in 1862. JW continued onto CA and married Mary Bentley, whom he met on the trail, there.

Nancy had two additional children that died in infancy, including a daughter that died on the trail to Silver City, NV. Names unknown.

Granddaughter Lucilla Adkins also shares the same plot - 76468905

NOTE: Death certificate spells name "McCormmach". Her brother, Russell, spelled his name McCormack, but information to the "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties", Goodspeed Publishing, Chicago, 1889 pg864-5, spells the family name as "McCormmach".

Apparently the family changed the name at some point. John W. McCormmach kept the spelling for the rest of his life although most of the siblings appear to have changed it.

Additionally, her middle name is spelled Litton on her death certificate, however it's possible it was actually Lytton, since son Edward's daughter Erna also has a middle name of Lytton. Listed on the Roster of California Pioneers compiled by the Native Daughters of the Golden West as "Nancy Lytton McCormmach." The information for the roster was supplied by Louise E. Gibbens, the wife of Edward Lewis Gibbens.

Gravesite Details

Nancy and Alfred had marital challenges and they did not live together for the last part of Alfred's life, hence the reason they are located on opposite sides of the plot. The plot was originally purchased after Nannie's death.
