Edna Garrett nee Stein was born in Rockdale, Milam County, Texas. She was a graduate of Rockdale High School and lived in Rockdale for the last 21 years of her life, after moving from Hobbs, New Mexico. During her career, she lived in several other places, including Washington, DC, California and Massachusetts. Ms. Garrett was a career U.S. Marine, serving during World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. She retired as a master gunnery sergeant on November 6, 1974, after 31 years. She died on a Thursday at her home in Rockdale. A graveside service was held Tuesday, May 25, 2010, in Restland Cemetery in Dallas with Dr. Reagan White of Arlington officiating.
