Missionary, Journalist, Political Activist for Korean Independence. After education at Dartmouth, he attended Union Theological Seminary. He traveled to Korea in 1886 to teach English, but was expelled by the Japanese government in 1907. The Korean government honored him with the Order of Merit for National Foundation for his work advocating independence of Korea from Japan. In 1949 South Korean President Syngman Rhee invited him to return to Korea.
