On 19 Apr 1889, the tragic loss of mother, son, and then daughter occurred when Katherine (the mother) was attempting to cross the Center Creek (Carthage, MO) in a wagon carrying her son Jesse , nine years old, a daughter, and driver, a farm hand. The creek was high due to a recent rain, and the wagon was overturned and sent down stream. Mother and son were drowned. daughter, the driver, and one horse survived. But daughter Ida died three months later of "brain fog", thought to have been caused by thoughts of the accident. Two years later, after a long illness, husband Alexander Hanson Lucas also died.
